Leaving San Francisco
In San Francisco, I was more confident that the insults I’d receive for running a red light wouldn’t be race-based than whether I would make it up the next hill if it was over >20%.

San Francisco
People here take a lot more risks, which is also why they throw a lot more money at ideas that have the potential to work. It's like buying an insanely expensive lottery ticket.
San Francisco
My expectations for San Francisco included meeting lots of passionate and ambitious people, with big dreams to change the world in a meaningful way.

That said, I have occasionally doubted whether or not it was the right choice to come here. In my dad's words: "Fay, you've already been poor (aka. a student) for 8 years and you finally graduated, and now you want to go on another internship for zero monies?
San Francisco
Every time I read about or meet people founding their own company, I think “damn, that’s so cool, why am I not doing that”. In the end, I know I’d regret not trying more than I’d hate failing.
San Francisco
I decided to look for jobs in San Francisco, little did I know things would go so differently here than they did in the Netherlands.

As you might have noticed, I’ve dialed down on writing about my adventures. Not sure if it’s because I’m doing less or because everything isn’t as new anymore.
School
I currently work for a start-up with 140 mostly American employees with an average employee age of around 25-30 and I’m starting to notice how different my background and experiences are from my colleagues.

Moving to another country is exhausting. I think I probably heavily underestimated the toll it would take on me mentally and physically, because I came here with so much enthusiasm and excitement that I forgot to take a moment to breathe.
San Francisco
It’s been nearly a month and so far, I still love it here. Very occasionally I miss the Netherlands because it’s exhausting to constantly have to adapt and arrange practical things such as housing, but everything is slowly coming together.
San Francisco
First of all, let me start off with the awesome news: I found a house! Whoopee. I’ll be living on Guerro St and 20th St, a block away from Dolores park.
San Francisco
Taking the very old school and noisy Caltrain down to Palo Alto, visiting a birthday party where everyone has 3 parties planned on the same evening and ending up at a "french" party with Stanford peeps.
Hey there,
I'm Fay.
Chinese by blood, Dutch by upbringing.
Third culture kid.
Global feminist.
Engineer by education but an aspiring entrepreneur at heart.
Passionate about sustainability, surfing and saving the world, i.e. humanity.
Only kind of joking there.
I really do want to make the world a better place. All I need to do is figure out how. While I'm at it, I thought I might as well share some stories along the way.
This blog is about my journey from growing up in Shanghai, to studying in the Netherlands, to interning in San Francisco, to starting a software engineering program in Lisbon and beyond.
